Installation

Windows Systems Windows Installer After the download, click to install
Mac/OS 10.4 or later Systems MAC .mpkg installer    After the download, click on the mpkg file. This installer will automatically install the ACORNS application and store its components appropriately on your system.

It will automatically move the ACORNS and Sound Editor applications to the application area of your system (/applications). Documentation and sample lessons will move to /Library/Documentation/acornsDocumentation, and the software for the various lesson types will move to the /Library/Frameworks/acorns.framework folder.

Mac/OS 10.4 or later Systems MAC .dmg install
After the download, click on the dmg file. When the folder opens, you can drag the application to the applications folder in Macntosh HD. However, the program will need the folder plugins to run. When ACORNS first runs, if it cannot find that folder, it will ask you for to browse for the location of that folder. For this reason, the .mpkg install is easier. See notes at the bottom of this page for more details.

Manual ACORNS installation distributions and installation instructions

Windows .zip archive
Linux .tar.gz bundle
  1. Uncompress your distribution folder and save it in a safe place on your system.
  2. For Linux systems: acorns-linux and soundeditor-linux are the executables. After uncompressing you will need to change permissions on these files (ex: chmod 775 acorns-linux)
  3. For Windows systems: acorns.exe and soundEditor-Win.exe are the executables.
  4. The plugins folder has software for the various lesson types.
  5. You can make aliases or shortcuts to these executables, but if you move the application, ACORNS might not be able to find the plugins folder. When you run the application the next time, it will ask you to browse for the plugins folder if it cannot find it. (The application cannot run without it.)
  6. Should you misplace the plugins folder, you can download it by clicking on these links: plugin zip file or plugin tar.gz bundle.
