2. Tell us about a free software package that relates to multimedia. What do you like about it?

I use Irfanview mainly for image re-sizing when I don't want to wait ages for Photoshop to open up. It's a nice, quick little program and it appears to have the ability to create thumbnails and slideshows, although I have not used those features. It's available for free at [www.irfanview.com].

9. Browsers can play audio using a standard hyperlink. Why is it better to use the object tag?

If you use a standard hyperlink, you don't get volume options, or any options really. It is just loads a plain page with sound your sound. You want users to be able to control the sound!

15. Explain how to use two of the attributes in the img tag.

the alt attribute allows you to describe the picture (in just a word or 2) so that people who cannot view the picture for whatever reason will be able to see at least a description of it. So if you want to load an image of Skeletor to your website, you should put an alt description that fits that image (it's actually required if you want your code to validate!) Also, your alt description will appear if you hold your mouse pointer over the image.

<img src="images/skeletor.jpg" alt="This is Skeletor!" />

hspace and vspace put some white space around your picture so that you can separate your text from your picture:

<img src="images/skeletor.jpg" alt="This is Skeletor!" hspace="5" vspace="5" />

8. What are advantages of Notepad++ over Notepad.

I started this term using Notepad. I just began using Notepad++.

There are lots of advantages to Notepad++, most of which I haven't even figured out yet.

First, you can run the web page directly from the program rather than going to the browser and opening the file. This saves a lot of going back and forth between Notepad and browser.

Second, you can have multiple pages open in Notepad++ and switch between tabs rather than have different windows open. I haven't figured out how to look at the split screen yet.

Third, Notepad++ color codes the tags. THis is advantageous for several reasons. It is apparent right away if the tag is not closed properly. Also if the tag is not a supported tag, it doesn't change the color.

16. Why is it dangerous to link to external images?

The web site that the image is linked to may rename the image, move the image or delete the image completely and then the link will not work.

7. How do you hyperlink to the middle of a page? How do you create an e-mail hyperlink?

To hyperlink to the middle of the page, the first thing that needs to be done is to create an anchor where you want the link to go to. A good example of using hyperlinks to the middle of pages is the use of contents at the top of the page with a link to the topic specified in a particular section of the contents. So, for example, we have created a page about various operas. At the top are links to the sections that provide a synopsis of the plot of the opera.

So the first we do is create an anchor at the synopsis to the opera "La Boheme":
<a id="la_boheme"</a>

Next at the top of the page where the text in the contents would list the opera "La Boheme" we create a link:
<a href="#la_boheme">La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini</a>
The # sign is an indication to the browser that the link is an internal link to another place on the same page. Clicking the link takes the browser from the contents down to where the anchor is and the synopsis of the opera "La Boheme."

The way an e-mail link is created is this:
Send an e-mail to me, <a href="mailto:parsonsr@sou.edu">Robin Parsons</a>
This link will only work if you have an e-mail client on your computer as the command calls up an e-mail window for you to type your message into. If an e-mail client is not present, then the command cannot call up an e-mail window.

5. Why do most web page developers indent HTML statements? What indenting conventions make sense to you?

- To stay organized and to make it easy to read (like when you are nesting tags easy to see open tag and close tag are lined up).

16. Why is it dangerous to link to external images?

- Because the image maybe removed and by putting the image in my folder I can make a relative link to it.

8. What are advantages of Notepad++ over Notepad.

One advantage of using notepad++ over regular notepad is that when you are creating a web page the code that is incorrect will show up as black text, letting the creator of the web page know what needs to be fixed.

3. What can you tell us about one of the popular different audio, video, or picture formats?

One of the most common video formats is MPEG. MPEG stands for Motion Pictures Expert Group. There are different versions of the MPEG standard.
MPEG was the first specification and it uses almost no compression. MPEG version 2 is an updated version of MPEG that uses compressions and MPEG2 the current standard for video. MPEG version 3 is well known as MP3. MPEG version 4 has better compression and support for HD however, there are optional aspects (like h.264) that can be implemented which currently causes interoperability problems.
MPEG 4 will replace MPEG 2 but, MPEG 2 is the standard for now.

The MPEG standards address video and audio as two different streams. This means that they can be compressed differently and that synchronizing the two streams is very important.

7. What happens when in Notepad, you save as and choose index.html for your name, but don't put quotes around it?

The file you save will show "index.html.txt". With "txt" extension, it is a text-only file. When you open "index.html.txt" with Firefox, it will show the code you wrote.

16. Why is it dangerous to link to external images?
-There is no guarntee that the image that you linked to will be there in the future.

13. What are the uses and values of the target attribute? What tags make use of the target attribute?
-target="_blank"

Displays linked page in teh same browser window
-target="_parent"

16. Why is it dangerous to link to external images? Because they could change at any time without you knowing it.
